Before completing my Occult research i had drawn some monsters in illustrator via my Wacom tablet. Although these illustrations come after the research page within my sketchbook they were inspired by imagery i had found previously. I decided to complete some illustrations that were drawn directly into illustrator so i could see if this medium differed the overall style of my work.
Overall these monsters i feel were not as successful as the ones i have previously drawn by hand. Illustrator tends to smooth out any lines which would otherwise be present when drawing by hand. Although these can be added back into the illustration with the use of the pen tool i still found this did not achieve the same effect as when drawing by hand.
These monsters are in a very random composition all floating in mid air. This is something i have planned to edit later as i just wanted to focus on the difference in medium for the time being.
After printing the monsters out i thought long and hard about how i should present them within my sketchbook. I eventually settled on not cutting them out individually as this is something i have already done frequently within my drawings by hand. Instead i tried to experiment with adding a layer of tracing paper on top which i had used pens to add colour to. The effect of this was so the tracing paper would be attached at one end and you could view the monsters with or without colour. After completing this experiment i decided not to include the layer of tracing paper as i felt the colours did not resemble my colour pallet well enough.
As my original layout of the monsters was not overly impressive i decided to use the tracing paper to present them in two alternate layouts. Overall i feel the bottom layout is more successful as they are all spread out more evenly and not jumbled on top of each other. Within the bottom image i also experimented with a variety of different pen weights. I feel this has been successful in some areas as it helps certain features to stand out more than others; however, i feel it would have benefited from a bigger difference between the weights.
With the left over space on this page i once again decided to experiment with text, this time inspired by the font on my moodboards. Overall i feel the slimy texture would really appeal to my age demographic, as would the hues. As well as this i feel the light green highlights add depth to the font making it appear more 3D. On my birthday cards and wrapping paper i would like to use a play on words that means happy birthday; however, i have not thought of what this could be yet. Instead i decided to stick with the classic happy birthday in the hope that this would be the start of me being able to visualise how i could slightly alter it to really suit a young boy.
Despite having a variety of research from different sources, upon speaking to my support worker she mentioned a book that may interest me. The book entitled Encyclopedia of the Occult features text and images all based around spiritual, mystical and supernatural beings and phenomena. By researching images in this book i am expanding my research back through time to look at earlier works of monster beings instead of just ones from cartoons and illustrations.
The book features more text than writing; however it is interesting to let your mind visualise the beings and concepts described within the book. When trying to create monsters it can be hard without inspiration as, as human we can identify pretty much every living being on earth which limits my imagination. Within the pre-log of the book it speaks about this issue that writers, film makers and artists encounter and suggests for us to look beck to Occult theories in order to get inspired.
So’s not to read the book and forget what i have learnt i have scanned in some of the imagery i think will appeal to my target market and relate to my project. This i have then arranged on a page in my sketchbook, much like i did with the imagery i encountered at the beginning of the project. The style of the illustrations is very different from the direction my project is taking; however, it is the interesting shapes and figures that has attracted me to include them within my developments.
The real focus out of these two pages is number 10. To create these designs i scanned page 8 into illustrator and image traced it. Following this i then used the brush tool to add colour within each monster. From the paperchase design mat rhys sent us i knew i wanted to use as limited colour pallet as possible to see if i could achieve the same effect.
For this design i selected 3 central hues which would make up the vast majority of the design and then the basic black and white; however, also added small elements of yellow. The main inspiration of including yellow within this design was to make the monsters teeth appear slightly more disgusting than they already are. I feel this will really appeal to my 8- 11 year old boy market as it will make the monsters seem gross and this addition is not graphic enough to put millennial parents off buying my designs.
In all but one area using only 3 main colours was successful. Adding bright colours allow the eye to easily separate each element which will become more key if this design were to be put into a continuous repeat. The one area this didn’t work so well is within the bottom right section where the two blue monsters touch. This has meant each is not as defined as i would have liked it to have been. Despite this, this is something i could go onto experiment with; however, it would have to appear in at least two areas (dependent on the size of the motif) in order for this to look purposeful and not like a mistake.
Despite being happy with this design and the tones used i couldn’t help but wonder what it would look like with a white outline or a black background. As this process wouldn’t be so time consuming as colouring in all the monsters i decided to give it a go. I experimented with a whole range of combinations of white, black and no outlines against a white and black background; however, only selected my few favourites to document so’s to be concise and display my best work.
For the first of my two developments i selected white outlines on a black background. I like how the black background really makes the colours pop and seem alot brighter than they do on the previous design. I feel this would be a good technique to use for alternate colour ways when developing my collection.
Despite this i feel the white outlines are more successful with the heavier weighted lines. This way they really pop against the black background and do not get lost within the array of colours.
As well as experimenting with the hue of the outline i also wanted to investigate what the design would look like without one. I first experimented with removing it completely; however, this looked very messy and wouldn’t appeal to my target audience. Instead i settled for a white outline on a white background which gives the impression of no outline. This helps to include lots of the features and textures that were other wise lost and also allows each hue to distinctly stay within the monster it was originally allocated.
I feel these two experiments have been very successful with developing my original imagery and has given me lots of inspiration for later in the project. From here i want to try and combine all 3 designs within my sketchbook to see if i can develop them any further.
To combine my 3 designs originally i did think about slicing them into equal thirds and then sticking them all back together; however, after thinking about this i did not think it was anywhere near creative as what a boy around the age of 10 would do. Instead i stuck all 3 pages together and then cut them into random sections using a scalpel. I feel this created a much funner combination that would better reflect an 8- 11 year old.
From here i laid each 3 designs out and then started piecing them together. I aimed for each section to be different from the next so’s to create the most variety within each design. If i were to do this in a professional setting or towards the end of the designing process i most likely would have done it using photoshop; however, at this stage i wanted to experiment with this technique by hand. Overall i feel each design has come out quite well and i am actually surprised by how well they all piece together.
Despite thinking this is an interesting development i will most probably not construct my final repeating design in this way. I feel this technique has worked better when focusing in on single monster faces where there is a dramatic contrast between one half of the face and another. This may be an interesting technique i could use on my cards and tags where there will only be one or two elements.
The page previous to this (page 9) was more so about utilising the space in my book and recycling the left over parts from my cut out design. I decided to present each element separately instead of in a collage format to see if there were any particular sections and textures i like when thinking about creating a blender design. Overall i think this is actually a very good way at viewing designs less holistically as it has allowed me to pick out textures which would be repeated to create a much bigger piece.
Before developing my work on page 7 i scanned each motif into illustrator so i had a copy. To develop this imagery with colour i printed off two of the motifs and coloured one with felt tips and the other with pencil. As i did not have my colour pallet finalised at this time i decided to experiment with hues i thought i may use.
When thinking about my target market i feel the bright colours of the felt tips would stand out to them more. The tone of the pencil is a lot softer and more appropriate for an elder demographic. When selecting which colours i would use i referred back to my market research in order to see which hues are usually present within boys gift wear. I feel blue, green and red are prominent throughout this research which will make my designs appeal more so to boys. If i was aiming at an elder demographic i would be able to be more experimental with my range of colours; however, i believe at the age of 8- 11 boys will not appreciate the likes of pink and purple tones on their gift products.
From here i want to finalise my colour pallet in order to start experimenting with the hues i will be using within my designs. The sooner i finalise this and start to play around adding the colours to motifs the more flexibility i will have altering them before i start on my final designs.
This page concists of 3 seprate illustrations which have been combined onto one page within my sketchbook. All the imagery is inspired by the same sources; however, varies in pen weight.
I thought it would be interesting to see what would happen if i tried to draw one monster face linking onto the next and let one form effect another. At first i was apprehensive as i have never tried anything like this before, but as i have collated such a range of imagery to be inspired by one form flowed onto the next naturally.
I found one of the ways to make this design appear really interesting was to draw as many monsters as i could with their mouths open. This allowed me to extend and exaggerate this feature much more so than when it was bound by the constraints of the face. When adding a background tone i feel this will also benefit my work as it will allow the background and monsters to blend together, rather than there being a very distinct foreground and back ground.
Out of the 3 pen weights i feel the lightest is the most effective. With the very thick pen i found it hard to include many fine details and to create definition. As well as this i really like the contrast i could create using the thinner pen between the lines with a heavier weight and the lighter ones. I feel this really adds depth to the image and draws the eye to particular features. Although the medium weighted pen was a lot easier to work with than the thick one the definition between the eyes and outline is not as strong as that of the lighter one.
Overall i really enjoyed creating these designs as i honestly did not know what was coming next. I would use the previous illustrations curves to picture where the next could fit in and until i got going i was not 100% sure what would happen. I feel this imagery would really attract my target market as it would play on their imagination.
Within these designs i tried to include a variety of mark making to add texture and fill the negative space. I found the ruff swirly lines really suited the style of the piece and also helped to exaggerate certain features such as the mouth and eyes.
Between each motif i tried to fill the gaps with more mark making using a veriety of weighted fine liners. Overall i think the overall page would have been more sucessful if i had filled the gaps with even more monster faces. The marks i have added between each motief slightly contrast the overall style of the design and dont bring the page together as well as i feel it could have done.
At the top of this page i also decided to try and incorporate text within the design. Originally i was going to add further mark making; however, felt this will give me a change to experiment further with typography. Overall i feel the style of the texts really suits the motifs as the ruff wonky edges match that within the textures of the monsters. To make this appeal more to my target market i feel i could have been more experimental with the size of the letters as although they are not perfect i still could have exaggerated this further.
Out of one of my illustrations i decided to continuously layer it up to create a textured croquis design. This i did via photoshop by just copying and pasting the image and layering it up in a random composition. Developing this imagery was more for fun and to start experimenting with different compositions i could use rather than for any serious benefit. Despite this, i think laying the illustration up in a random formation has worked and will really suit my younger demographic. The composition reminds me of chickens all running across the page and looks more interesting than them being laid out individually in a half drop or block repeat. To create a full repeating design i could use this entire motif and then repeat it in this way.
To present this design in my sketchbook i decided to use black electrical tape as i felt this relates to how my target demographic may stick something to their bedroom wall using what ever materials they can find. As well as this, taking inspiration from my moodboards i decided to extend the design out of its bounding box using a fine liner. I feel this could be more effective if i had the pen colour which is present in the printed design to colour the monotone illustrations in. As i do not have this hue i have decided to leave them monotone. This will allow me to also easily scan them in and image trace them on illustrator if i ever want to develop them further.
Although this experiment was just for fun it has given me another idea of layout within my own designs and also expanded on my illustrative imagery.
To kick off my illustrations i selected some of my favourites from my instergram research and tried putting my own twist on their style with a range of pens in different weights including a biro, silver permeant ink pen, a fine liner and a pencil. I wanted to experiment with a range of different pens for these illustrations to see if i preferred one over another. Overall i found the biro the least satisfying to draw with as it did not have the fluidity of the fine liner nor permanent ink pen. Despite this the permanent ink pen was not great either as it had quite a big tip making fine details a struggle. From these experiments i think i will next experiment with a range of different weighted fine liners. This should introduce depth to my illustrations and can also help me to highlight certain features and include fine details.
As my drawings were very monotone i also decided to include some mark making around the entities also in a monotone colour scheme. Although within my outcomes i want to explore colour i thought this would be a good chance to really explore different pen weights. To make my mark making as abstract as possible i decided to just go around the edge of my cutting out to see where it took me. By doing this i have used these lines to exaggerate some of the features of each entity which draws them all together as one page of work, rather than 4 separate elements.
For this mark making i used 4 different weights ranging from one very thick Sharpie marker to a fine liner that i had used within my chicken illustration. As the Sharpie tip was angular and oblong and not round like the others i found this the most difficult to draw with as it required the most control. Despite this it does add a nice contrast compared to the rest of the thinner ones. If i were to use this marker again i would have to think of my work in a very abstract way as it would take alot of time to pratice using the pen so you know exactly what it will do next. Overall i really enjoyed this mark making experiment and depending on my hero and secondary designs can see it being used as a blender design by editing it digitally.
As my initial illustrations were so monotone i decided to scan them into illustrator so i could image trace them and then add colour through the use of my wacom tablet. Although wanting the entities to be fairly recognisable at this stage i wanted them to come across as slightly strange in order to attract my age demographic. For my chicken i settled on a nice green hue as this tends to be more of a boys colour. This i then posed against a red to create a contrast within this single image. Overall i think i have been successful in making what appears to be a genetically altered chicken. The green body paired with multiple eyes should really play on the boys imagination and not put off the millennial parent to much so they are still willing to buy the card/ gift wrap it is featured on.
For the wolf entity i went for a much more conserved brown. Looking back i am not sure why i didn’t go for blue or red in order to make it really stand out. Despite my lack of experimentation with colour in this area i did decide to become more experimental with the colours that are portrayed around its belly. When thinking about what colours to add i couldn’t help but think about a baboons red and blue bum. Although this may sound very weird my head is clearly slowly turning into an 8- 11 year old boys. I think the illustration would have been lacking without this essence of colour as the brown does make the overall image seem very realistic and dull. As the wolf looked very vicious i decided to add some red blood to create an element of a story and to add some more colour. Although i am glad i experimented with this i can not imagine a millennial parent picking up a card with this element on it and saying yes that is perfect for my 9 year old son’s friends birthday. If i am to include blood in any illustration i feel it should be anything but red.
Once i had the two illustrations printed out and i was trying to think of how to arrange them on the page i started to think about how they would look combined together. I did think about doing this digitally; however, thought at this early stage i may as well experiment by cutting them out by hand as they have no need to be perfect as of yet. Overall i feel this idea has really worked and as helped with getting me into the mindset of what i need to be doing in order to create these weird and mysterious monster creatures. There is so much more i could do with these two illustrations such as swapping the legs about and giving the wolf chicken wings; however, as i know i do not want the wolf to feature within my designs i feel it is best to move on for now and come back to this design later if i change my mind.
To present these illustrations i wanted to do something more than stick them to the page so i first thought about them walking around planet earth. This experimentation with proportions was something i had picked up a lot on with my research so thought it be worth while to give it a go. After a couple of minutes thinking how i was going to draw the earth i started to think what would be more appropriate to a young boy would be some sort of fairly stupid slogan about the images. Evolution of the chicken got stuck in my mind because of how the chicken gets deformed as it goes around the earth. This also allowed me to have my first experiment with typography which will be essential as at some point i will most likely have to write happy birthday on something.
Looking back i wish i done the text in a lighter green to help it pop against the black lines. I originally selected this green as it was slightly different to more classic shades but looking back a lighter one would have been better. I also wish i created this design on a separate piece of paper and then cut it out so i was able to stick it to a piece of blue or black card. I know the background is not my finest hour of work; however, i just wanted to add a suggestion of colour to what otherwise would have been a very plain background.
This year for my annotations i have thought it be easier to number the pages in my sketchbook so the annotations can be easily accessed on my blog. On each double page spread there will be at least one number in either of the bottom two corners. I would have liked to number each page; however, sometimes the illustrations just wont alow space. Now in third year i prefer to type up my annotations as then i can read back though my work, check it and change it a lot more easily than if i had written them straight out into my sketchbook.
With pages 1-3 of my sketchbook i decided to collage some of my favourite images i have found throughout my research in order to have it to refer back to during my illustrations. Although i have my theme board this is an a lot less formal collection of ideas on which i have included more imagery; where as my theme board is very concise with the imagery i wish to portray.
As i am entering into a very different realm compared to my usual illustrations i felt the need of a hub of ideas that showed the full extent of aspects and ideas i can tap into. For myself i think this was a very good idea as not only does it give me some inspiration on where my project is heading; however, it also gives anyone viewing my sketchbook a very clear idea of the themes and style at where i started.
Although enjoying these three pages i wish i had been more experimental with cutting the images out. On some i followed the outlines; however, i wish i did this on more. This would have made the 3 pages stand out even more and create a much funner vibe.
Although feeling the need to start my sketch book in this way i do feel guilty about using more than 13 sheets of printed paper to create this, especially as i am trying to go down a more ethical route to attract a millennial market. From now i will see what scraps of paper i can pick up to print onto to ensure this project does not cause total deforestation…
As mentioned earlier within my blog posts i wanted to include seeds within my products so they would give back to the source they are made from. I also mentioned about having a tree planted for each product bought; however, upon further research into this it may be a very costly process. I will bring this idea up when i next see Mat; however, for now i will just focus on the seeds included within my products.
Upon initial research there are lots of interesting products on the market that would make tree planting enjoyable for young boys. The first company i encountered was Kabloom who use a bomb shaped holder which is filled with seeds. I feel this would attract to my target market because of the shape of the packaging, and to plant the seeds it requires you throwing the bomb which would be a lot more interesting than digging a hole and planting them for a young boy. Although i am interested in this idea on their website i can only find this product that plants flowers and herbs. I have emailed the company to find out if they offer a range which plants trees so will wait to hear back from them.
The second product i have encountered is called Grow Me Money Tree seeds. I think the name of this product will attract my target market as it suggests they will be able to gain a financial benefit from this product. Although with this product you can definitely plant trees the process is a lot less interesting than throwing a bomb across the garden as you have to physically plant the seeds in the pot provided. Despite this, this product retails for £1 less than the seed bomb at £2.75.
Another product i have encountered is Grow Your Own Chocolate Scented Flowers. This product because of the smell i think would really appeal to my target market; however, growing flowers not so much. This product retails for the same price as the seed bomb.
Between these 3 products i feel i am on the right track for finding a way to grow trees that would really appeal to my target market. If only i could find tree seeds, in a bomb with the promise of smelling like chocolate…
Out of my entire time here at cardiff met making moodboards i has never found it so stressful. Working for a completely different market in a totally new style has certainly challenged me and how i present my project. Despite this once i solidified what i needed to do it became a rather pleasurable process.
When starting to gather and arrange my images i followed the format i almost always have done. Using the squares around each image to carefully space and lay them out. Despite being happy with the composition of my theme board (shown bellow) i did not feel it really enraptured the theme its self. The imagery within each illustration was demonstrating what i needed it to say; however, it was restricted by the layout.
With my customer moodboard (shown bellow) i felt once again it had all the information; however, the very geometric and precise layout didn’t represent a 8- 11 year old. To gain inspiration for the images used on my moodboard i messaged my brother to find out some of his likes. Being a different gender and older it can be hard to put yourself into your customers shoes, so thought it be best to directly find out what some 11 year old boys are into. Although i realise one 11 year old boy will be very different from the next i am sure at least one image will speak to each child.
As well as creating a customer moodboard for the boy, as i have noted it will most probably be the millennial parent buying the card i thought it be best if i also create a customer moodboard for them. I felt this precise layout better suited this millennial age demographic much better than it did my child or theme. Within this moodboard i used inspiration from my trend research on millennials. From this i found out they were really into sustainability and social media so i included images for each of these on my moodboard.
When it came to creating my occasion board i started to get a lot more creative with my layout. As my designs would be for a birthday i wanted to have this board more of a celebration and less geometric in its structure. Despite using images that really represented a birthday i felt the images didn’t represent my theme as well as they could have done.
At this point i had not started to experiment with fonts or texts for my moodboard. Although this may have helped me think further into my theme i wanted to leave this until last and i could get an idea of what would best suit the imagery i have used.
Not happy with my customer board and having seen how much more interesting my occasion board looked i decided to have another go at my boys customer board. For this i used the same themes and ideas i had done previously; however, gathered different images that i could cut out on photoshop which would create a more interesting composition. Although feeling this was a step in the right direction i still felt it was not anywhere near exciting enough. I knew something was missing but couldn’t work out what it was nor how to do it.
Within a tutorial it was noted that although stand alone my boards were ok they didn’t come together as a collection. Each one was very separate focusing on the single idea of each board and did not have one constant theme throughout. At this point i was told that if i drew into my theme board and extended some of my images this would allow me to represent my theme better. I took this inspiration on board and started to completely re think how i was approaching this task. Although i felt my images represented a 8- 11 year old, my head when laying them out was not thinking how this age demographic would.
(BOYS) CUSTOMER
I knew i had to get more drawing elements into each board to represent my theme better, so used the imagery i already had as inspiration and drew them myself. By drawing more elements i have been able to bring in my theme and style into my customer board a lot better. To create a much more playful layout i stuck to images that i could cut out. By drawing certain elements it has also allowed me to combine different ideas. Fortnite is an xbox game which is at the heart of most boys lives so i decided to add this to the knife that is cutting the pizza. I also felt it was important to include a hockey stick as most younger boys play sports. To make this represent an 8- 11 year old better i decided to search for cartoon vectors. This image creates a much more playful feel than the one i was using originally.
Although liking all the imagery in the foreground i felt the background was lacking something as there was a vast white space surrounding the pizza. Instead of leaving it plain i thought this would be a good chance to try and incorporate some more monster elements into my design. Not only have the eyes extended on the child’s likes; however, also allowed me to introduce my style to the board some more.
(ADULT) CUSTOMER
Although feeling my previous board worked it didn’t enrapture my theme and made my millennial parent look a little boring. I decided to strip right back on the amount of images used and focused on a few which went directly to the heart of my customers interests.
As this is the adults board i didn’t mind using images that were bound to a box so much. I felt i could extend them; however, also use them to represent a slightly more mature demographic. Once again i wanted to really inject my theme into this board so started to highlight different areas through the use of texture and colour. By doing this i feel i have made the millennial parent seem more fun and edgy than they previously were. Once happy with what i had added to each image i then laid them out and started to bring them together by extending these textures. This brought the images together rather than them being completely separate elements to the millennial parents lives.
Within the image of social media on the left i decided to add one of the illustrations i researched onto the computer screen. This represents the millennial parents interests and what they enjoy looking at whilst on Facebook and other sites. I felt this was a really good idea to demonstrate what the millennial parent would be interested in when looking online.
One thing i was keen to include on this board was the parents intrest in sustainability; however, i wanted to do this in a much more interesting way that represented my style than i have done previously. Inspired by my original image i decided to create my own bunting version representing the same theme. As i am thinking of introducing the idea of tree planting within my collection i felt this quote directly related to that, meaning the millennial parent would have a direct intrest in my collection.
OCCASION
Although liking the elements on my previous occasion board i felt i really had to tone it down and just focus on a few key themes more appropriate for my target market. As i liked the imagery on my previous board instead of totally discarding it i once again used it to inspire my new one.
I really enjoyed the playful use of the dinosaur a-mist the happy birthday bunting; however, did think it was a little to childish. To try to still use this image i image traced it. By doing this i feel it is more mature and also suits my style a lot better.
I decided to use a black background for this design as i really liked the way it made the colours pop. Within my own illustrations most if not everything will be accompanied by a black outline so it has allowed me to bring my style and theme into this board.
I really liked this image above of monster presents; however, once again felt it was aimed at a much younger age demographic than what i was aiming for. Like my dinosaur i first tried image tracing it; however, this time this technique didn’t work for me. I eventually settled on just doing some plainer presents to represent the birthday theme. Originally i was thinking of adding a big bow on the top of them but decided this may be a bit to girly.
I really liked the gift bags on my original occasion board but neither had imagery on them that i felt totally represented my theme. Because of this i decided to draw my own. By drawing my own i have allowed myself to bring my theme into my moodboard and also incorporate my colour pallet.
After finalising these elements i felt i had the ideas for happy birthday; however, lacked the celebration element. To incorporate this into my new occasion board i was once again inspired by previous imagery and decided to draw my own. Using this idea has again allowed me to bring my colour pallet and style into this board. I feel this element has worked really well, especially against the black background. I was trying to be really loose when drawing each curl via my wacom tablet and feel they really represent my targeted age demographic because of their loose and free style.
COLOUR AND TEXTURE
This board i had not had a first attempt at unlike some of my others so was started from scratch. I knew i wanted to use the soft yellow and electric blue hues i had encountered previously from my trend research so started my colour pallet with these two tones and then extended from there. For the rest of the colours i was inspired by the research i have been doing and then altered them in tone ever so slightly so they all worked together nicely. To display my colour range i decided to use scribbles instead of precise squares. I felt this much better represented my theme and style.
Inspired by my tutorial i decided to extend the imagery i already had in order to create a more fun composition. By doing this the images do not appear bound at the edges and also play on the idea of a story unfolding.
Overall i thought i would really struggle with this board as it was only my first attempt. Despite this i think because i now know i have to inject my theme and style into every board it made it a lot easier.
THEME
My original theme board was chocker block with different designs that although did represent my theme, overwhelmed the board its self. Although i would have liked to add perhaps one more large design i felt the 4 on this was just enough to convey my theme without overloading it.
Extending certain elements of the designs really helps to break up the bounding box and also alowed me to inject my own personality and style within this board. As well as this it was also rather enjoyable to get my head into that of an 8-11 year old and how they would imagine each element extending.
Now i am an awful lot happier that my theme board represents my theme and incorporates how i will use this to create my own style. Using these two bigger images has also helped to bring my colour pallet into this board so it is more of a continuation rather than two totally separate moodboards.
Now being happy with how my theme is portrayed not only within this moodboard but within the others as well, i selected a font that i have used to title my moodboards. At one of my work experiences i learnt the art of downloading fonts from an online source so had a wide variety to choose from by using this method. I selected this one called ‘Snot’ as i liked the textures used and felt it linked in well with my theme and the interests of my target audience.
COMPETITORS
Overall my competitor moodboard is my least favourite. Although i have managed to inject my theme through the loose scribbly lines i feel it still needs more work before i am 100% happy with it. At this stage i will leave it how it is until i can gain feedback during a tutorial.
I selected Fenwick and Papercase as my main competitors as they have imagery that is similar to my own in different ways, and also attract the same age demographic i am looking at. Not only this but their in store prices are about the same as that of Selfridges.
Overall i am a lot happier with my moodboards now than i was with my first attempts. Once i was told i had to look at them as a collection and inject my style into each one the process became so much easier; despite the fact i should have already known this. From now i will wait to gain feedback for them and then look at developing them further. Creating them up to this stage has also given me a much better idea of the direction my designs will take. Being so experimental with layouts has really inspired me to start to think about this within my own work and made me realise how much this can affect the overall style of my designs.
Upon reviewing my moodboard i decided it was only the bright white lines that i did not like. To make them more subtle i introduced some draw grey lines. This has lowered the contrast between the foreground and background.
